Conflict Looms in Kano as Disputed Emirs Plan to Lead Friday Prayers at Same Mosque

In Kano, there’s growing concern as two rival leaders, Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II and Emir Aminu Ado Bayero plan to lead Friday jumaat prayers at the Palace Central Mosque.

Emir Sanusi II, who was recently reinstated, is already in residence at the Palace and has traditionally led the Jumaat prayers there.

A statement from his office, signed by Munir Sanusi Bayero, confirmed his intention to continue this practice, inviting the city’s residents to attend.

In contrast, another statement issued by an aide of the dethroned Emir Aminu Ado Bayero also called upon the citizens to join him at the same mosque for the Jumaat prayer.

These simultaneous calls to prayer at the same venue have not yet drawn any official response from local authorities or the police, increasing the uncertainty and fear among the residents about the possibility of clashes or unrest.

The city has been is on edge since the reinstatement of Emir Sanusi, with protests and conflicting court orders – one asking him to vacate the throne for Emir Ado Bayero and another mandating the police to ensure he remains on the throne.
