A Nigerian court has admitted $100,000 in cash, several mobile phones, and an SUV as evidence in a trial involving an alleged $700,000 fraud scheme.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is prosecuting Mr Joshua and Mr Hashim for their alleged roles in the multi-million naira scam. The prosecution claims the suspects orchestrated a scheme that resulted in a total loss of approximately $700,000.
The EFCC alleges that Mr Joshua impersonated the personal assistant to the commission’s chairman, Ola Olukoyede, to facilitate the fraudulent transactions. By posing as a high-ranking official within the anti-graft agency, the suspect allegedly gained the credibility necessary to deceive victims into transferring funds.

During the legal proceedings, the evidence presented in court included the large sum of US dollars alongside the mobile devices and the SUV. The prosecution intends to use these items to establish a direct link between the defendants and the proceeds of the alleged crime.
The mobile phones are expected to play a central role in the trial, as they may provide digital evidence of communications between the suspects and their targets. The SUV and the $100,000 cash are being treated as assets allegedly acquired through the fraudulent activities.
Impersonation of law enforcement officials remains a significant challenge for Nigerian security agencies. Criminals often exploit the authority of institutions like the EFCC to bypass the scrutiny of potential victims, making it difficult for individuals to distinguish between legitimate official engagements and sophisticated scams.
The EFCC has previously cautioned the public about these tactics, noting that fraudsters frequently use the names of prominent government officials and agencies to lend an air of legitimacy to their schemes.
The trial is set to continue as the prosecution prepares to call additional witnesses and present further forensic findings related to the digital evidence recovered during the investigation.
