Court Sentences Oluwatimileyin Ajayi to Death for Killing NYSC Member
The High Court of Nasarawa State sitting in Lafia today sentenced Oluwatimileyin Ajayi to death by hanging for the brutal murder of NYSC member Salome Adaidu.
Presiding Judge Simon Aboki found Ajayi guilty of dismembering Adaidu after a trial that centred on a single count of culpable homicide. Under Section 221 of the Northern Nigeria Penal Code, which equates such an act to murder, the offence carries a mandatory death sentence.
During sentencing, Justice Aboki described the crime as “harrowing” and emphasised the need to uphold the sanctity of life. Ajayi, who remained silent throughout the proceedings, was formally handed the warrant of execution.
Prosecutors had presented medical and forensic evidence showing that Adaidu suffered fatal injuries consistent with deliberate dismemberment. The defence offered no mitigating circumstances and did not call any witnesses.
With today’s ruling, the court has underscored its resolve to impose the fullest penalty for the most serious of crimes. Legal observers note that Ajayi has the right to appeal to the Court of Appeal within 30 days.
