Operatives of the Delta State Police Command have apprehended a herbalist and a 36-year-old man over the alleged illegal possession of firearms in the Isupe community of Ndokwa West Local Government Area.
The suspects, identified as Chukwuka Nzete, a herbalist, and Joel Iwomi, were taken into custody following a tactical operation. During the arrest, police recovered two pump-action guns, 18 live cartridges, and other dangerous items from the suspects.
The law enforcement action, which took place in the Isupe community in Ndokwa West, is part of an ongoing effort to curb the proliferation of small arms and light weapons within the state.
The recovery of these weapons comes at a time when security agencies in the Niger Delta are intensifying efforts to intercept illegal arms that are frequently used in kidnappings, armed robbery, and communal violence. The presence of live ammunition alongside the pump-action guns suggests a high level of readiness for violent activity.
Ongoing investigation into suspects
Police officials are currently investigating the motives behind the possession of the firearms. The command is working to establish if the suspects are part of any organised criminal syndicate or if the weapons are linked to other security threats in the Ndokwa West area.
The arrest follows previous operations by the Delta State Command aimed at dismantling criminal networks in rural and semi-urban locations. Residents have been encouraged to report suspicious activities and the movement of illegal weapons to the nearest police station to aid these operations.
The suspects remain in police custody pending the conclusion of the investigation. Once the probe is complete, they are expected to be charged in a court of competent jurisdiction for the illegal possession of firearms and other related offences.
