Ebonyi Police Dismantle Child-Trafficking Syndicate and Rescue Three Minors

The Ebonyi State Police Command has dismantled a notorious child-trafficking syndicate and rescued three abducted children during a recent security operation in the state.

The crackdown, which has resulted in the recovery of the three minors, has prompted law enforcement officials to issue a stern directive to the public regarding the legalities of child welfare. Following the dismantling of the child-trafficking syndicate in Ebonyi, the Command warned that all adoption and fostering processes must strictly follow official, legal channels.

The police emphasised that individuals seeking to adopt or foster children must work through authorised government ministries to ensure the legality of the process. This directive aims to prevent criminal elements from using unregulated adoption arrangements as a cover for human trafficking and the exploitation of minors.

Legal protocols for child adoption and fostering

In Nigeria, the legal framework for child welfare is designed to protect the best interests of the child, a process heavily regulated by state governments. The Command noted that bypassing these official routes often leads to the illegal movement of children, which constitutes a grave criminal offence under the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act.

To ensure transparency and child safety, prospective parents are required to engage with the Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development in their respective states. These agencies are responsible for conducting background checks, home assessments, and ensuring that the placement of a child is documented and legally binding.

The recent rescue in Ebonyi highlights the risks associated with unregulated child transfers. Law enforcement agencies have noted that criminal syndicates often target vulnerable families or exploit the lack of awareness regarding formal adoption procedures to move children across state lines for labour or other forms of exploitation.

The Ebonyi State Police Command has indicated that investigations are ongoing to identify and prosecute all members of the syndicate involved in the recent operation. The three rescued children have been placed under the care of relevant social welfare authorities, who will manage their welfare and facilitate reunification with their families where possible.

Security agencies have stated that they will continue to intensify surveillance and intelligence gathering to disrupt similar criminal networks operating within the Southeast region.
