The Minister of Education, Dr Maruf Tunji Alausa, has stated that the deployment of off-grid solar solutions across Nigerian tertiary institutions is reducing the heavy financial burden of electricity on universities.
The initiative, which focuses on providing captive solar energy, is intended to allow institutions to divert funds previously spent on power procurement toward faculty development and the purchase of essential laboratory and classroom equipment.
These off-grid solutions are being rolled out under the Energizing Education Programme (EEP), which is executed by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA).
The Minister noted that the transition to sustainable energy is not only a financial relief but a necessary step in improving the overall standard of learning. He argued that stable electricity is fundamental to modern academic research and the operation of digital learning tools, both of which have historically been hindered by Nigeria’s unstable national grid.
Impact of the Energizing Education Programme
For decades, Nigerian universities have struggled with erratic power supply, forcing many to rely heavily on expensive diesel-powered generators. This dependence has created a significant drain on institutional budgets, often leaving little room for the upgrading of academic facilities or the procurement of modern instructional materials.
By implementing captive solar energy—where power is generated on-site for the exclusive use of the institution—universities can bypass the volatility of the national grid and the rising costs of fossil fuels. The EEP aims to create a sustainable energy ecosystem within campuses, ensuring that critical areas such as lecture theatres, libraries, and research laboratories remain powered without interruption.
The Rural Electrification Agency, which manages the technical execution of the programme, focuses on deploying scalable solar hybrid systems. These systems are designed to meet the specific load requirements of different campuses, reducing the operational expenditure (OPEX) for university administrations.
Beyond the financial savings, the Minister emphasised that the availability of reliable power is expected to enhance the productivity of both students and lecturers. Stable energy allows for the consistent use of computers, internet connectivity, and specialised medical or engineering equipment that cannot function under fluctuating voltage.
The shift toward renewable energy in the education sector aligns with broader Nigerian government goals to increase electrification in rural and semi-urban areas where the national grid is least effective. It also reduces the carbon footprint of large academic institutions, moving them toward a greener operational model.
The Ministry of Education and the REA are expected to continue the rollout of these solar solutions to more institutions across the six geopolitical zones to ensure equitable access to stable power across the federation.
