EFCC arraigns four over N44 million contract fraud in Maiduguri

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned four individuals in Maiduguri over the alleged fraudulent diversion of N44 million.

The defendants face eight counts of various offences, including conspiracy, obtaining money by false pretence, criminal misappropriation, forgery, and the use of false documents. The legal action follows investigations into the procurement and subsequent handling of funds linked to specific contracts in Borno State.

This arraignment of the four in Maiduguri outlines a pattern of alleged deceptive practices used to secure and misappropriate the N44 million.

Details of the criminal charges

The eight-count charge sheet filed by the commission suggests that the defendants acted in concert to bypass standard financial protocols. The allegations of forgery and the use of false documents indicate that paperwork may have been manipulated to legitimise their claims to the contract funds.

Criminal misappropriation and obtaining money by false pretence are central to the prosecution’s case. These charges typically involve the redirection of funds that were intended for specific project executions or the use of fraudulent representations to induce payments from stakeholders. In the context of contract fraud, such actions often involve the inflation of costs or the creation of ghost services to justify large disbursements.

The EFCC has intensified its focus on contract-related irregularities within the North-East region, targeting individuals and entities suspected of undermining public and private procurement processes. The commission’s move in Maiduguri is part of a wider effort to recover diverted funds and prosecute those involved in the misuse of contractual allocations.

The defendants await a date for their plea and subsequent trial proceedings as the commission prepares to present its evidence to the court.
