EFCC arraigns S Mobile Netzone Limited over N12.5bn fraud

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned a businessman and S Mobile Netzone Limited in a Lagos court over an alleged N12.5 billion investment fraud.

The charges follow an intensive investigation into the company’s operations, which the commission alleges involved running unauthorised schemes designed to defraud investors. The legal proceedings follow the EFCC’s decision to arraign the company and an individual in Lagos for their alleged involvement in the massive financial crime.

S Mobile Netzone Limited was previously identified by the commission as one of 58 companies listed in a public alert issued in March 2025 regarding suspected illegal investment schemes. This recent arraignment marks the transition from regulatory warnings to formal legal prosecution.

The N12.5 billion figure is a central component of the case, representing the estimated amount allegedly diverted through these unauthorised investment activities. The commission’s investigation indicates that the company operated without the necessary regulatory approvals to solicit funds from the public for investment purposes.

Regulatory crackdown on illegal schemes

The arrest and subsequent arraignment of S Mobile Netzone Limited follow a period of increased scrutiny by the EFCC on unregulated financial entities. In March 2025, the commission had warned the public about various companies using high-interest promises to lure unsuspecting citizens into unregulated operations.

Unregulated investment schemes present a recurring threat to the Nigerian financial system, often targeting individuals seeking to hedge against inflation. These entities typically bypass the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) and other regulatory bodies, leaving investors with limited recourse when the schemes collapse.

The EFCC’s involvement in this case is part of a broader effort to police the digital and traditional investment landscapes in Nigeria. By bringing large-scale fraud cases to court, the commission aims to establish a deterrent against similar operations that threaten market integrity.

The scale of the alleged fraud shows the challenge of managing financial crime in an environment where digital investment platforms are rapidly expanding. For many victims, the prosecution offers a potential, though complex, path toward the recovery of lost funds, provided the court eventually orders the forfeiture of assets linked to the crime.

The legal proceedings are currently ongoing in a Lagos court. The court is expected to hear the defendants’ plea and address applications for bail in the coming days.
