Effiong Okon appointed CEO of Seplat Energy

Effiong Okon has been appointed as the Chief Executive Officer of Seplat Energy, taking over the leadership of the company following its recent expansion. The appointment is intended to steer the enlarged energy firm through its next phase of operational scaling and production growth.

In his new capacity, Okon will be responsible for overseeing the company’s core operations, ensuring the timely delivery of key projects, and driving production targets. A central component of his mandate includes spearheading Seplat’s gas development strategy, which is viewed as a critical pillar for the company’s long-term growth and energy transition goals.

The appointment of Effiong Okon as chief executive officer follows a period of leadership transition within the organisation. This follows the earlier appointment of Tony Elumelu as Chairman, as the company reorganises its top management to handle its growing asset base.

Strategic focus on gas and production

Okon’s leadership arrives at a period when Seplat Energy is managing a significantly larger portfolio. The company’s recent expansion has increased its operational complexity, requiring a leadership team with the expertise to manage larger-scale assets and more intensive project timelines.

The specific focus on gas development in Okon’s mandate aligns with the broader energy transition within the Nigerian oil and gas industry. As the country moves to leverage natural gas as a primary transition fuel for power generation and industrial use, Seplat’s ability to execute its gas strategy will be a significant factor in its ability to meet domestic supply needs and investor expectations.

As the company navigates this expansion, the new CEO will be tasked with balancing the maintenance of current oil production levels with the aggressive development of new gas infrastructure. The successful execution of these upcoming projects will serve as a key performance indicator for the company’s board and shareholders.

The appointment comes as indigenous energy companies in Nigeria face increasing pressure to enhance production and mitigate operational challenges. Stakeholders will be watching to see how Okon manages the company’s expanded footprint and whether the new leadership structure can deliver on the strategic promises made during the recent corporate restructuring.
