Ekiti State begins renovation and upgrade of NYSC camp

Ekiti State has commenced the renovation and upgrade of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp to address critical structural issues within the facility.

The decision follows a directive from the state governor to carry out comprehensive integrity tests on all buildings at the camp. This intervention was prompted by the recent collapse of toilet facilities at the site, which raised concerns regarding the safety of corps members and staff.

The upgrade of the NYSC camp aims to rectify these structural weaknesses and prevent future accidents. The Ekiti State Commissioner for Youth Development, Gold Adedayo, recently conducted an inspection of the ongoing works to ensure the project meets required safety standards.

Ensuring structural safety at the orientation camp

The state government’s decision to prioritise integrity tests comes as part of an effort to assess the viability of existing public infrastructure. Following the collapse of the sanitation facilities, engineers were tasked with examining the foundations and load-bearing capacities of various blocks within the camp to identify further risks.

During the inspection, Gold Adedayo focused on the progress of the renovation works and the effectiveness of the safety measures being implemented. The ministry is working to ensure that the accommodation and utility blocks can safely host the large numbers of graduates that visit the state for their orientation exercises each year.

The NYSC camp is a vital facility for Ekiti State, serving as a central hub for national integration and youth engagement. Maintaining the camp’s facilities is essential for the smooth running of the orientation programme and the well-being of the corps members staying on-site.

The state government is expected to provide further details on the timeline for the completion of the various renovation phases as the structural integrity tests continue.
