Emir Sanusi: Over 40 Kano Emirate Council Members Pledge Allegiance to New King
Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II, the 16th Emir of Kano and former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), on Sunday presided over his first emirate council meeting since being reinstated.
This event took place at the historic Gidan Rumfa Palace and marks a significant step in restoring stability within the Kano Emirate following recent tensions.
Dressed in traditional royal attire and riding a white royal horse, Emir Sanusi emerged from the inner sanctums of the Gidan Rumfa, greeted by the cheers and jubilation of his people.

Interaction with the Public
After the council meeting, Emir Sanusi engaged with various interest groups, including vigilante groups and women’s organisations.
These interactions were part of his broader effort to reconnect with his people and restore confidence in the emirate’s leadership.
Emir Sanusi’s first official meeting with council signifies a unifying moment for the emirate. With the full backing of Kano’s traditional and community leaders, his governance is poised to foster a period of development in the region.
The Backtory
Emir Sanusi’s return to power follows his reinstatement by the Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf last week.
The monarch’s reappointment came after the Kano assembly repealed a piece of legislation passed into law in 2019 under former the Governor Abdullahi Ganduje administration.
The law divided the Kano emirate into five parts, allegedly to dilute Sanusi’s influence, who was the Emir of Kano at the time.
This law led to Emir Sanusi’s removal. He was reinstated last Friday by the incumbent Governor Yusuf.
