Emmanuel Uduaghan Dies: Akpabio Mourns Ex-Delta Governor

Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, who served as Governor of Delta State for two terms, has died. Senate President Godswill Akpabio led early tributes, expressing profound shock and describing the former governor’s demise as a significant loss to Nigeria and the Niger Delta region.

Akpabio’s reaction, conveyed on Tuesday, highlighted the widespread impact of Uduaghan’s passing. He noted the late politician’s contributions to national development and his pivotal role in fostering peace and progress within the volatile Niger Delta.

Uduaghan, a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), governed Delta State from 2007 to 2015. His tenure was marked by efforts to stabilise the oil-rich region and implement various socio-economic development programmes.

Speaking from Abuja, Senator Akpabio, who also served as governor of neighbouring Akwa Ibom State during a similar period (2007-2015), emphasised the deep personal and political relationship he shared with Uduaghan. Akpabio lauded Uduaghan’s leadership, particularly his commitment to regional integration and stability. He conveyed his condolences to the Uduaghan family, the government, and the people of Delta State, praying for strength during this period of grief, according to a report by Channels Television.

A Distinguished Career in Public Service

Born on 22 October 1954 in Abigborodo, Warri North Local Government Area of Delta State, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan was a medical doctor by profession. He began his political career long before assuming the governorship, serving in various capacities within the Delta State government. These roles included Commissioner for Health and Secretary to the State Government (SSG) under his predecessor, James Ibori, positions that provided him with extensive experience in state administration.

As governor, Uduaghan inherited a Delta State grappling with challenges ranging from youth unemployment to the intricate issues of militancy in the Niger Delta. His administration’s core focus was on a ‘Delta Beyond Oil’ vision, aimed at diversifying the state’s economy away from its heavy reliance on crude oil revenues. This initiative saw investments in sectors such as agriculture, tourism, and human capital development. He was particularly instrumental in promoting peace and security, often engaging with various stakeholders to de-escalate tensions and secure amnesty programmes for ex-militants, which significantly improved the security landscape of the state.

Beyond his state-level contributions, Uduaghan remained an influential voice in national politics and within the PDP, offering counsel and participating in various party activities post-governorship. His departure leaves a void in the political landscape of both Delta State and the broader Niger Delta, where he was revered for his pragmatic approach to governance and his ability to bridge divides.

The passing of Dr. Uduaghan also marks the end of an era for a generation of politicians who shaped the democratic trajectory of the Niger Delta in the post-military dispensation. Tributes are expected to pour in from across the political spectrum as leaders reflect on his legacy of service and dedication to the development of his state and nation. Details regarding funeral arrangements are anticipated to be announced by his family and the Delta State Government in the coming days.
