Governor Umo Eno has declared Friday a work-free day across Akwa Ibom State to facilitate the upcoming visit of President Bola Tinubu. The decision is intended to allow residents to participate in the official reception of the President and showcase the state’s renowned hospitality.
The announcement follows the confirmation of the President’s itinerary, which includes a visit to the state. Through the state government, Governor Eno called on residents to turn out in large numbers to welcome the head of state, emphasising the importance of demonstrating the state’s culture during such high-profile national engagements.
The governor made the announcement as part of the preparations for the presidential visit to Akwa Ibom.
Security and logistical preparations
Presidential visits to Nigerian states typically involve intensive security mobilisations and logistical coordination between state and federal authorities. By declaring Friday a work-free day, the state government is positioning itself to manage the expected influx of people and the movement of the presidential convoy more effectively.
Security agencies, including the Nigeria Police Force and other paramilitary organisations, are expected to tighten surveillance across key routes and venues within the state. The work-free day allows for easier management of traffic and crowd control, reducing the likelihood of congestion in major urban centres such as Uyo during the President’s transit.
The move also reflects a common administrative practice in Nigeria where local governments declare holidays to allow for public participation in national events. While such declarations can temporarily pause formal commercial activities and civil service operations, they are often viewed as a method to foster community involvement in the activities of the Presidency.
For the business community in Akwa Ibom, the one-day pause in regular operations will influence market activities. While offices and many formal institutions will be closed, local informal sectors and service providers in areas designated for the presidential reception may see an increase in activity due to the expected large crowds.
The visit of President Tinubu comes at a time when state governors are increasingly engaging with the federal government to secure resources for infrastructural development and regional security. The reception is expected to be a significant political event, demonstrating the coordination between the Akwa Ibom state administration and the federal government.
The state government has not yet released a detailed itinerary of the President’s specific activities or the exact locations he will visit during his stay. Local authorities are expected to provide further updates on road closures and security protocols as the visit approaches.
