The Enugu Forestry Guard has declared a renewed commitment to securing the state’s forest reserves through enhanced inter-agency cooperation and increased patrols.
Dr Akinbayo Olasoji, the Commandant of the Enugu Forestry Guard, stated that the initiative is designed to ensure that the state’s forests remain safe for farmers, residents, travellers, and rural community dwellers. The agency is also prioritising the protection of wildlife and natural resources from illegal exploitation.
This strategy aims to mitigate the security vulnerabilities faced by people living in and moving through forest-adjacent areas. By working more closely with other security agencies, the guard intends to create a more effective response mechanism against environmental crimes and threats to human safety.
The Enugu Forestry Guard’s commitment to safety comes as part of a broader effort to manage the state’s ecological assets while supporting the livelihoods of those who depend on them.
Dr Olasoji noted that these sustained efforts are crucial for maintaining the integrity of the forest ecosystem. The guard’s mandate includes both human security and the preservation of the natural environment against activities such as illegal logging and poaching.
For many rural communities in Enugu, the forests are central to their economic survival. Farmers frequently use forest lands for cultivation, and any instability in these areas directly impacts food production and local commerce. Strengthening the presence of the guard is expected to provide a more stable environment for these agricultural activities.
Inter-agency cooperation is a central pillar of the guard’s strategy. By aligning operations with other law enforcement bodies, the agency intends to close the gaps that allow illegal actors to operate within the forest cover. This collaborative approach is designed to improve intelligence sharing and rapid deployment during emergencies.
The protection of wildlife and natural resources also forms a key part of the agency’s long-term goals. Ensuring that these assets are not depleted by unauthorised extraction is vital for the state’s environmental sustainability and future economic potential.
Local residents and travellers have often voiced concerns regarding the safety of forest routes. The Commandant’s plan to increase security presence is a direct measure to reduce these risks and provide safer passage through rural corridors.
