Olympic Eagles head coach Éric Chelle has summoned 31 home-based players to the national camp ahead of the upcoming two-legged U23 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying fixture against the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The squad, which consists entirely of players competing within the domestic league, is being assembled to prepare for the high-stakes encounter scheduled for next month. The selection aims to consolidate local talent ahead of the critical qualifying rounds that determine participation in the continent’s premier U23 tournament.
The invited players, comprising four goalkeepers, nine defenders, eight midfielders, and 10 forwards, are expected to report to the AM2PM Hotel to commence intensive training sessions. This move, as detailed in the announcement regarding the squad invitation, places a heavy emphasis on the depth of the Nigerian domestic football ecosystem.
Strategic focus on home-based talent
By opting for an all-home-based squad, Chelle is looking to test the readiness of local players for the physical and tactical demands of international competition. The decision to include 10 forwards suggests a proactive offensive strategy, as the coaching staff seeks to maximise goal-scoring opportunities in both legs of the tie.
The two-legged format against the Democratic Republic of Congo presents a significant challenge for the Olympic Eagles. In continental qualifying, the aggregate score often determines progression, meaning the squad must maintain high levels of discipline and tactical cohesion across both matches. The DR Congo side is known for its physicality, a factor that will require the Nigerian defenders and midfielders to be at their peak fitness levels.
Success in these qualifiers is essential for Nigeria’s pathway to the Olympic Games. The U23 Africa Cup of Nations serves as the primary qualifying route for African nations, and failing to progress at this stage would represent a major setback for the development of the country’s youth football prospects.
The reliance on home-based players also provides a platform for the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) to showcase its talent on the international stage. For many of the 31 players, these qualifiers serve as a direct audition for scouts and opportunities in foreign leagues.
The players are expected to begin their training programme immediately upon arrival at the AM2PM Hotel. The technical crew will focus on building chemistry among the various units, particularly the midfield and attacking lines, before the first leg of the encounter.
The Football Federation is expected to release the full training schedule and the specific dates for the matches against DR Congo in the coming weeks.
