EU challenges Sappi’s €1.42bn plan to merge with UPM

The European Union has formally challenged Sappi’s €1.42 billion plan to combine major paper operations with Finland’s UPM, aiming to create Europe’s biggest paper producer. The competition authority announced the formal objection, signalling regulatory scrutiny over the proposed integration.

The €1.42 billion, approximately $1.66 billion, transaction would consolidate significant paper assets across Europe. The EU’s intervention indicates potential concerns over market competition, though specific grounds were not detailed.

Regulatory approval for the plan now depends on addressing the EU’s concerns. No implementation date was provided for the challenged plan.
