Expect 3-Days Thunderstorms, Rain from Today – Nimet
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather advisory predicting thunderstorms and widespread rain across the country for the next three days, starting today, Monday, July 8th.
Residents in the northern states of Kebbi, Kano, Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, Taraba, and Kaduna can expect to wake up to thunderstorms on Monday morning. Those in the North Central region, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kwara, and Niger states, are forecast to receive lighter morning rains.
The southern states won’t be spared. NiMet predicts morning showers in Lagos, Ondo, Ebonyi, Edo, Imo, Abia, Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River states. However, the agency warns of a significant increase in activity later in the day, with thunderstorms and scattered showers anticipated across the entire southern region.

Tuesday and Wednesday see continued wet weather
The weather pattern is expected to continue through Tuesday and Wednesday. The north will experience a brief respite with partly cloudy skies on Tuesday morning, but thunderstorms are forecast to return in the afternoon/evening across Gombe, Bauchi, Borno, Jigawa, Yobe, Taraba, Adamawa, Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, Kebbi, Kano, and Kaduna.

The North Central region will see similar conditions with cloudy skies on Tuesday morning and a chance of afternoon/evening thunderstorms in the FCT, Nasarawa, Kogi, Plateau, Niger, and Benue states. In the south, residents in Enugu, Abia, Imo, Edo, Ondo, Ogun, Lagos, Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River states can expect morning showers followed by more afternoon/evening thunderstorms and scattered showers on both Tuesday and Wednesday.
Strong winds and safety precautions advised
NiMet has urged Nigerians to take necessary precautions as strong winds may precede the rains in areas prone to thunderstorms. The agency also advised airline operators to stay updated on the latest weather reports and forecasts to ensure safe and efficient flight operations.

For the general public, this period of wet weather could be a good opportunity to stay indoors and enjoy some downtime. However, those who must venture out are advised to be cautious of strong winds and to avoid low-lying areas that might be susceptible to flooding.
