The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Administration has set up a dedicated task force to tackle the high rates of maternal and newborn mortality through the Maternal Mortality Reduction Innovation Initiative (MAMII).
Dr Dolapo Fasawe, the FCT Mandate Secretary, inaugurated the group in Abuja. She stated that the task force will remain operational for as long as women continue to face the risk of death during childbirth or the newborn period.
The FCT Administration inaugurated the task force to coordinate efforts aimed at reducing maternal and newborn deaths across various communities within the territory.
Improving maternal health outcomes in the FCT
The MAMII framework is designed to synchronise health interventions and improve the delivery of obstetric care. In many parts of the Federal Capital Territory, particularly within the outlying satellite towns and rural areas, access to emergency obstetric care remains a challenge. The task force is expected to bridge the gap between community needs and hospital resources through better coordination.
Maternal mortality in Nigeria remains a critical public health concern. While urban centres like the city district of Abuja possess advanced medical facilities, many women in the territory’s periphery struggle with inadequate prenatal monitoring and slow emergency response systems. The MAMII initiative intends to use innovation to address these specific systemic failures.
The mandate of the task force includes monitoring healthcare facilities, overseeing community engagement programmes, and ensuring that maternal health data is accurately captured to inform future policy decisions. By involving medical experts, community leaders, and administrative officers, the administration intends to minimise the delays that frequently lead to preventable deaths during childbirth.
The next phase of the initiative will involve the deployment of the task force to specific high-risk communities to assess current service delivery gaps and implement coordinated response protocols.
