The Federal Government and the Benue State Government have announced plans to expand the Wurukum Flyover in Makurdi to a dual carriageway. The move is designed to alleviate the persistent traffic congestion that frequently affects the state capital.
According to project updates, the expansion of the Wurukum Flyover to a dual carriageway follows the current construction progress, which has reached a 69.87 per cent completion rate. The joint initiative between the two tiers of government seeks to modernise the road network in one of Benue State’s most critical transit zones.
The Wurukum junction serves as a major artery for commuters and commercial vehicles moving through Makurdi. For years, the area has been a significant bottleneck, especially during peak hours, causing delays for motorists and increasing the costs associated with transporting goods across the region.
Infrastructure improvements and economic impact
By upgrading the flyover to a dual carriageway, the governments intend to increase the capacity of the road, allowing for a higher volume of vehicles to pass through without the typical gridlock. A dual carriageway, which features separate roadways for opposing directions of traffic, is expected to provide a smoother transition for vehicles entering and exiting the flyover.
The transition to a dual carriageway requires significant engineering works, including the expansion of the embankments and the widening of the bridge decks to accommodate additional lanes. These enhancements are necessary to ensure the structural integrity of the flyover can support the increased traffic load expected upon completion.
Beyond reducing travel times, the upgraded road is expected to stimulate local commerce. Increased accessibility to the Wurukum area can boost the patronage of businesses located along the corridor, while also providing a more reliable route for the distribution of agricultural goods from Benue’s rural areas to urban markets. Improved road infrastructure typically reduces vehicle maintenance costs for commercial transporters and lowers the time required for the delivery of essential goods.
As the project moves towards its final stages, authorities are expected to focus on road surfacing, lane markings, and final safety installations. The current construction phase, which is nearing its final third, involves the reinforcement of the road base to support the new configuration.
Motorists using the Wurukum route are advised to remain cautious of ongoing works in the vicinity. The successful delivery of the expanded flyover is expected to provide much-needed relief for the thousands of daily commuters who rely on this critical infrastructure for their movements within and out of Makurdi.
