Four miners killed in Plateau State pit collapse

Four miners, including two women, have died following a pit collapse during mining activities in Bokkos, Plateau State.

The victims, identified as two men and two women, lost their lives when the earth gave way during excavation. The incident has sparked fresh concerns regarding the safety protocols governing local mining sites in the region.

Daniel Tula, a Bokkos Youth Leader, confirmed the fatalities during a telephone interview with Channels Television.

Risks of unregulated artisanal mining

The tragedy in Bokkos draws attention to the persistent dangers faced by artisanal miners across Nigeria’s Middle Belt. In Plateau State, mining for minerals such as tin and columbite remains a major economic driver, yet a significant portion of the activity is conducted through informal, unregulated methods.

Artisanal miners often operate in deep, narrow shafts that lack the necessary structural timbering or engineering supports required to prevent soil movement. These pits are particularly vulnerable to collapse during periods of heavy rainfall or when the soil composition is unstable, often resulting in fatal accidents for those working underground.

While the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development has frequently called for the formalisation of the artisanal sector to improve safety and tax compliance, many miners continue to operate outside the official regulatory framework. The lack of oversight means that many sites do not undergo the geological assessments necessary to determine if a pit is safe for human entry.

For many residents in Plateau State, these mining activities provide a vital, albeit high-risk, livelihood in areas with limited industrial employment. The economic necessity of extracting minerals often outweighs the immediate perceived risks of the working conditions.

As of Tuesday evening, state mining authorities and local law enforcement had not released a formal statement regarding the specific cause of the collapse or the commencement of an official investigation. The community is currently awaiting confirmation on whether any further recovery efforts are planned for the site.
