Germany Opens Applications for Digital Security Training for Journalists

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) in Germany is inviting journalists to apply for its Berlin Fellowship Program in Digital Security, which will run from May to October 2025.

This six-month program will help six journalists improve their digital security skills to protect themselves and others.

Funded by Berlin’s Senate Department, the fellowship will teach participants important digital security skills like managing online identities, secure communication, and protecting data.

What the Fellowship Offers

Fellows will receive training from experienced instructors on:

  • Secure Communication and Data Protection: How to keep communications private and store data safely.
  • Online Identity Management: Tips on protecting identity online and using tools for privacy.
  • Comprehensive Security Practices: A complete approach to staying secure online.
  • Protection Against Digital Threats: Handling online harassment, doxing, and other digital risks.

RSF will cover travel, visas, housing, health insurance, and public transport for fellows. Each fellow will also get a monthly stipend of €1,000. Participants will connect with other journalists and RSF’s team in Germany, learning more about RSF’s work in supporting press freedom.

The program is open to journalists, bloggers, and media professionals with experience and digital security challenges. Requirements include:

  • Good English skills (the program will be in English).
  • Willingness to share new skills with colleagues back home.
  • Commitment to the weekly 20-25 hour training schedule.

Journalists covering issues like environmental topics, labor rights, or corruption are encouraged to apply.
