Gov Eno proposes increased bursary for Akwa Ibom students

Governor Umo Eno has proposed an upward review of bursary allocations for students in Akwa Ibom State, suggesting new rates of ₦200,000 for indigenes and ₦250,000 for other student categories.

The proposal is intended to provide financial relief to students, helping them manage the rising costs of tuition fees more effectively. By increasing these allocations, the state government aims to reduce the economic pressure on families and students pursuing higher education.

The move follows proposals regarding increased bursary payments for Akwa Ibom students aimed at addressing the financial hurdles encountered by many learners in the state.

In addition to the tertiary support, Governor Eno reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the foundational levels of the state’s education system. He stated that the government would continue to sustain free and compulsory education at both the primary and secondary school levels.

Expanding educational support in Akwa Ibom

The proposed increase comes as Nigerian students face significant economic challenges, including inflation and rising academic fees across various institutions. The Governor noted that the adjustment is a direct response to the need for students to manage their educational expenses with greater ease.

The distinction between the ₦200,000 rate for indigenes and the ₦250,000 rate for other categories suggests a tiered approach to student support within the state. This strategy is designed to provide a broader safety net for the diverse student population currently studying within Akwa Ibom’s borders.

For the state administration, this initiative aligns with a broader focus on human capital development. By maintaining free education at the primary and secondary levels while providing bursaries for tertiary students, the government is attempting to secure a continuous pathway for academic advancement in the state.

The implementation of these new bursary rates will now depend on budgetary provisions and administrative processes within the state’s Ministry of Education. Students and parent bodies are expected to await further details regarding the specific eligibility criteria and the application timeline for the new funds.
