Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago has sworn in six new commissioners to join the Niger State Executive Council, a move intended to bolster the state’s administrative capacity and accelerate its development agenda.
The swearing-in ceremony, held at the Government House in Minna, marks a strategic adjustment to the state’s leadership structure. The new appointees are expected to provide specialised expertise to their respective ministries as the administration intensifies its policy implementation across the state.
During the event, Governor Bago charged the new commissioners to leverage their professional backgrounds in their service to the state. He emphasised that their performance would be measured by how effectively their ministries contribute to the administration’s core developmental objectives.
The governor made these remarks during the swearing-in ceremony of the six new commissioners, where he stressed the importance of accountability and results-oriented governance to ensure the state’s growth.
Strengthening State Governance
The addition of these six members to the Executive Council is viewed as a step to address specific sectoral needs within Niger State. The current administration has previously prioritised key areas such as agricultural productivity, infrastructure development, and economic diversification, all of which require dedicated ministerial oversight to achieve measurable impact.
In Nigerian state governance, the appointment of commissioners is a critical component in translating a governor’s manifesto into actionable policies. These officials serve as the primary link between the executive leadership and the state civil service, ensuring that government projects and social programmes reach their intended beneficiaries effectively.
The new commissioners will now work alongside the state’s permanent secretaries to oversee departmental operations. Their immediate task involves aligning ministerial activities with the broader economic goals set by the Bago administration, particularly in improving service delivery across the various local government areas of Niger State.
Following the ceremony, the appointees are expected to assume their duties immediately and begin departmental briefings to assess ongoing projects and identify areas requiring urgent intervention to meet the administration’s timelines.
