Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State has confirmed that the 23rd National Sports Festival, scheduled for 2026, will not be postponed. The governor’s decision comes amid speculation that the event might be shifted to avoid clashing with the political activities preceding the 2027 general elections.
The governor gave this assurance during a strategic working visit by the Main Organising Committee (MOC) Advisory Team at the Enugu State Government House. The team visited the state capital to assess the level of readiness and the progress of infrastructure development required to host the biennial event.
Mbah’s commitment to the original timeline provides a clear directive to athletes, sports administrators, and contractors involved in the preparation of sporting facilities across the state, ensuring that the project remains a priority for the state government regardless of the upcoming electoral cycle.
The National Sports Festival is Nigeria’s premier multi-sport event, designed to discover grassroots talent and foster national unity. Hosting the festival brings significant economic opportunities to the host state through increased tourism, hospitality revenue, and the development of permanent sporting infrastructure that serves the community long after the event ends.
During the meeting, the governor ruled out any delay to the schedule, emphasising that the state is dedicated to delivering a world-class competition. He noted that the administration is focused on ensuring that all technical requirements set by the federal government and the MOC are met.
Infrastructure and Technical Readiness
The MOC Advisory Team’s visit focused on auditing the existing sporting facilities in Enugu and identifying gaps that need to be filled before 2026. This includes the assessment of athletics tracks, swimming pools, indoor gymnasiums, and accommodation facilities for thousands of athletes and officials from the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory.
Historically, the National Sports Festival has faced challenges with scheduling and funding, with some editions experiencing delays. By explicitly rejecting a postponement, Mbah is positioning Enugu as a reliable host capable of managing the logistical demands of the festival while maintaining governance stability.
