Here’s Why Uber Nigeria Has Increased its Fare
Uber Nigeria has increased fares on its UberX starting from Tuesday, October 6, 2020. UberX, generally perceive as being more cost-effective for passengers, is the most popular private car service on offer at Uber.
The ride-hailing giant disclosed this in an e-mail shared with the riders and seen Business Elites Africa. Uber increased its minimum fare from N400 to N500, base rate from N200 to N220 and from N60 to N65 per kilometre.

Uber Fare Increase to Support Driver-Partners
The company clarified that the decision was made to balance driver-partners’ reliable earning prospects, as well as a reliable and accessible service for passengers.
It stated, “While we have always tried to keep prices as low as possible, we need to be aware of the increased costs for driver-partners. This comes after implementing an in-depth earnings review to ensure that the Uber app continues to be a reliable economic opportunity for driver-partners, as well as an affordable option for riders. We believe that these fares remain competitive, and we’re committed to offering high-quality service to driver-partners in Lagos.”
In February, Nairametrics reported that some Uber and Bolt riders expressed their displeasure when they noticed an alleged rise in the ride-hailing companies’ fares.
Another protest was reported on the 14th of September by TheGuardian. The drivers at the time pushed for the implementation of better pricing by the dominant ride-hailing companies, which they claimed have continued to ignore the impact of petrol price and poor fare charges on trips.
