How Maiduguri Flood Made Animals Like Lions, Snakes to Escape
In Maiduguri, Borno State, a huge flood has caused a big problem at Sanda Kyarimi Zoo.
The flood, which happened after the Alau Dam collapsed, flooded the zoo and allowed some dangerous animals to escape.
What Happened?
When the dam broke, it sent a massive amount of water rushing through Maiduguri. The floodwaters quickly overwhelmed the zoo, breaking down the fences and barriers that kept the animals inside.
Because of this, several animals, including lions, snakes, an ostrich, and even a crocodile, have managed to get out of their enclosures.
One of the crocodiles that escaped was later found dead, which shows just how chaotic things have become. The ostrich is still wandering around, and the escaped lions and snakes pose a real danger to people living nearby.
What’s Being Done?
The zoo’s director, Ayuba Peter, was shocked by the extent of the damage. They’ve closed off the roads around the zoo to keep people away and have staff working to recapture the escaped animals. It’s a tough job because the escaped lions and snakes are dangerous and hard to catch.
Inside the zoo, reports say that about 80% of the animals have died because they were trapped in their enclosures with the rising water. Many crocodiles and snakes have been washed away, and it’s unclear what happened to the rest of the animals.
The Situation Now
The flood is still causing problems in Maiduguri, and the zoo staff, local authorities, and emergency workers are doing their best to handle the situation.
They’re focused on making sure people stay safe and trying to catch the animals that are still on the loose. Everyone hopes that things will calm down soon and that they can bring the situation under control.
