How to Keep Your Skin Hydrated During Harmattan Season

The Harmattan season, with its dry and dusty winds, can be tough on your skin. The cool air and low humidity can leave your skin feeling tight, rough, and dry. If not properly cared for, it can even cause your skin to crack or itch. 

But don’t worry, with a few simple habits and the right products, you can keep your skin hydrated, healthy, and glowing during this season. Here are some tips on how to protect and hydrate your skin during Harmattan:

Drink Plenty of Water

The first step in keeping your skin hydrated is to stay hydrated from the inside. During Harmattan, the dry air sucks moisture from your skin, so drinking enough water is essential. 

Try to drink at least 8 glasses of water every day to keep your skin plump and refreshed. If you find plain water boring, try adding slices of fruits like cucumber or lemon to your water, or even enjoy some herbal teas. Hydration from within helps keep your skin glowing and healthy.

Moisturize Often

Moisturizing is one of the most important things you can do for your skin during Harmattan. A good moisturizer locks in the moisture and prevents your skin from drying out. Go for a thick, creamy moisturizer with ingredients like shea butter, glycerin, or aloe vera these are perfect for keeping your skin soft and hydrated. 

After bathing or washing your face, apply moisturizer right away to trap in the moisture while your skin is still damp.

Take Care of Your Lips

Your lips are especially prone to dryness in Harmattan, so it’s important to keep them protected. A good lip balm can keep your lips soft and prevent them from cracking. Choose a lip balm that contains nourishing ingredients like beeswax, cocoa butter, or shea butter. 

Also, make sure your lip balm has SPF to protect your lips from the sun, which can still damage them even during cooler weather. And remember, avoid licking your lips, as this can make them even drier.

Use a Gentle Cleanser

When the Harmattan winds dry out your skin, it’s important to use a gentle cleanser that doesn’t strip away your skin’s natural oils. Harsh soaps and strong cleansers can make your skin even drier and more irritated. 

Look for mild, fragrance-free cleansers that cleanse without leaving your skin feeling tight. A gentle cleanser helps maintain your skin’s natural moisture while keeping it fresh and clean.

Don’t Forget Sunscreen

Even though Harmattan comes with cooler temperatures, the sun’s harmful UV rays are still at work. Applying sunscreen is a must, as it protects your skin from sun damage and prevents premature aging. 

Choose a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 and apply it every morning, even if you’re staying indoors. Don’t forget to cover your face, neck, and any exposed areas to keep your skin safe and shielded from the sun’s rays.
