Imo Police Commissioner Denies Ransom Payment for Released Corps Members

The Imo State Commissioner of Police, Audu Bosso, has denied receiving any information regarding ransom payments made for the release of recently abducted National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members.

Speaking on the matter, the Commissioner stated that the release of the corps members was a result of intense pressure applied by security agencies during a tactical operation. He maintained that the kidnappers eventually surrendered the victims after police operatives combed the forest areas to track their movement.

This denial comes amid growing public scrutiny regarding the transparency of police operations in kidnapping cases. While law enforcement agencies often report successful rescue missions, the high frequency of ransom-driven releases in Nigeria frequently leads to skepticism from families and civil society organisations.

Security challenges and NYSC safety

The Commissioner’s remarks were part of a statement regarding the release of the abducted corps members, where he emphasised that security forces had successfully pressured the criminals into compliance. He noted that the forest combing operation was central to the successful outcome of the mission.

The safety of NYSC members has become a significant concern for the federal government and the scheme’s management. As corps members are deployed to various parts of the country, including high-risk areas in the South-East, they have increasingly become targets for criminal elements seeking quick financial gains through kidnapping.

In Imo State, the security landscape continues to be complicated by various criminal activities, including banditry and kidnapping. The police’s insistence on attributing the release to tactical pressure rather than financial negotiation is seen by many as an effort to discourage the kidnapping economy, which thrives when ransom payments are made secretly.

Despite the police account of a successful rescue operation, questions remain regarding the specific details of the operation and the current whereabouts of the suspects involved. The NYSC has yet to issue a formal statement regarding the safety and wellbeing of the released members or the specific security protocols being implemented to prevent future occurrences in the state.
