INEC sets 7:30 a.m. readiness target for 2027 elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has established a strict operational goal for the 2027 general elections, targeting the full readiness of all polling units by 7:30 a.m.

This directive is intended to prevent the systemic delays and late commencements that hindered several previous voting exercises in Nigeria. The commission aims to ensure that both election officials and essential materials are stationed at their designated locations well before the official start of the polls.

Speaking on the commission’s preparations, Mr Ifogah noted that the INEC Chairman, Joash Amupitan, has issued clear instructions regarding punctuality. The chairman emphasised that election officials and materials must not arrive late at polling units, as early readiness is essential to the integrity of the electoral process.

Addressing logistical bottlenecks

The push for a 7:30 a.m. start follows the widespread challenges faced during the 2023 general elections. In many parts of the country, voters faced long queues and expressed frustration when polling units failed to open until mid-morning or later due to the late arrival of personnel and sensitive materials. These delays often contributed to voter fatigue and a decrease in overall turnout.

By setting this specific target, INEC is attempting to address these logistical hurdles through more rigorous planning and stricter deployment timelines. The commission intends to minimise the time citizens spend waiting, which is a key factor in maintaining public confidence in the democratic process.

Achieving this target will require the commission to refine its supply chain management and enhance the training of ad-hoc staff. Moving sensitive materials to remote or hard-to-reach areas remains one of the most significant challenges for the commission, especially when accounting for Nigeria’s complex terrain and various security considerations.

As the 2027 election cycle progresses, the commission will need to coordinate closely with security agencies to ensure that the movement of materials is both timely and secure. The success of this initiative will depend on the effectiveness of INEC’s forthcoming deployment strategies and its ability to manage personnel across all thirty-six states and the Federal Capital Territory.
