International Students Choose the US Over Canada, Australia, and the UK as Costs Rise
The latest IDP Education Emerging Futures survey shows that popular study destinations like Australia, the UK, and Canada are losing some appeal among international students, while interest in studying in the US is rising.
The survey, which ran from August 20 to September 16, 2024, gathered responses from over 6,000 students across 114 countries.
It revealed that many students are now reconsidering or delaying their study abroad plans due to increasing costs.
Since its start in March 2022, this survey has become a regular source of insights, with most respondents planning to study at the postgraduate level.
India and China were the largest markets, followed by the Philippines, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Nigeria, Nepal, Indonesia, Ghana, and Vietnam.
Changing Preferences in Study Destinations
Australia is still the top choice for 24% of students, but the US is close behind at 23%, overtaking the UK, which sits at 21%.

Canada has dropped to fourth place at 16%, losing nine percentage points since August 2023. Reports link Canada’s decline to visa delays and changing policies, pushing students to consider other options.
Meanwhile, interest in “other destinations” has grown to 11%, showing that students are now exploring a wider range of study choices.
According to the survey, post-study work opportunities are the top factor for over half of the students when choosing where to study.
Other important factors include pathways to permanent residency (43%), visa financial requirements (42%), and visa costs (41%).
Additionally, more than a quarter of students take into account the rights of dependents when selecting a destination.
Recent policy changes, including increased proof-of-savings requirements in Australia and Canada and higher visa fees, are also influencing decisions.
Financial Challenges and Delayed Plans
Financial challenges are a significant barrier for students. About 3% of those surveyed said they are putting their plans on hold, mainly due to tuition fees, high living costs, and visa expenses.
However, nearly half of those delaying their plans still expect to apply in the next few years, showing that finances are a temporary issue rather than a permanent one.
The US is becoming a more attractive choice, as students rate it highly for education quality, value for money, and job opportunities after graduation.
Although possible changes to US immigration policy in the upcoming elections could impact interest, many students are focused on the strong reputation of US education.
“Students prioritize educational quality, which they increasingly associate with the US,” said Dr. Fanta Aw, CEO of NAFSA.
The survey highlights that students are becoming more informed and selective in their choices. Traditionally, students flocked to destinations like the US, UK, and Australia, with Canada gaining popularity more recently.
However, post-pandemic, students are carefully weighing the pros and cons of each country based on costs, opportunities, and long-term goals.
