The International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria has demanded immediate sanctions against the officers involved in the recent police invasion of a TV station in Kaduna. The media advocacy group described the raid as a direct assault on the freedom of the press and a violation of fundamental journalistic rights.
The condemnation comes at a time when media practitioners are increasingly vocal about the safety of journalists in Nigeria. The IPI Nigeria National Committee stated that the actions of the police force contradict the expected standard of professional conduct required in a democratic society.
The group expressed particular disappointment regarding the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force. They noted that the recent appointment of Tunji Disu as the Inspector General of Police (IGP) had raised expectations for a new era of respect for human rights and media independence.
