Is Man City Back in the Title Race?

Manchester City has struggled this season, but a 6-0 victory over Ipswich has raised hopes that they are finding their form again. After a tough run of just one win in nine league games, City was 12 points behind Liverpool and out of the title race.

But the win over Ipswich helped them climb into fourth place, and manager Pep Guardiola saw signs of improvement.

Guardiola said after the match, “We are back to doing things that define this team for the last 10 years.” He emphasized the team was rediscovering their identity and playing with the intensity that had been missing in recent weeks.

The 6-0 win saw City’s attacking play return. They scored 14 goals in their last four games, showing that their offensive power was back. The performance was a reminder of the form City had been known for over the past decade.

Title race still possible?

The chase for the title may be over for this season—after all, it would take a remarkable run of form to close the 12-point gap with Liverpool. But Guardiola isn’t ready to give up just yet. Historically, Manchester City has shown resilience.

In the 2018-2019 season, they trailed Liverpool by 10 points at one point and went on to win the title by just one point. The 2024 season isn’t over, and until it’s mathematically impossible, it’s not wise to rule out the chance of a comeback.

While the title may be out of reach, Guardiola believes it’s still possible for City to finish in the top two. They have shown resilience in the past, overcoming a 10-point deficit to win the league in 2018-2019.

Phil Foden’s return to form has been key. After scoring twice against Ipswich, Foden has five goals in his last three league games, showing the hunger and desire that had been missing earlier in the season.

Looking ahead, City faces a crucial Champions League match against Paris St-Germain. A strong finish to the season could help them secure a top-four finish and qualify for next year’s Champions League.

Don’t count city out just yet

Mark Schwarzer, a former Middlesbrough goalkeeper, said on BBC Radio, “I don’t think you can rule Manchester City out. Certainly to finish in the top two. The title may be out of reach, but there’s still enough football to be played.” The message here is clear: City can’t be counted out, even if their title hopes look bleak for now.
