Japan to Open Applications for Driver Jobs for Foreign Workers in 2025

Japan is broadening its Specified Skilled Worker (SSW) program to include more roles in the transport sector, creating new job opportunities for international workers.

This expansion targets labor shortages in key areas such as taxi, bus, and truck driving.

The Japanese government’s move comes as the nation faces a growing demand for skilled drivers amid an aging population and shrinking workforce.

By offering foreign drivers the chance to work and live in Japan, the program aims to fill critical gaps while providing competitive salaries and pathways for workers to bring their families.

According to DAAD, the SSW program is part of Japan’s broader strategy to attract foreign talent and counter workforce decline.

Applications for the transport sector roles will begin in January 2025, with the full program rollout scheduled for mid-2025.

Benefits for Foreign Workers

International drivers joining Japan’s transport sector can expect several advantages:

  • Competitive Salaries: Pay varies by role, with taxi drivers earning between JPY 2.5 million and JPY 3.2 million annually (USD 22,000–28,000), and truck drivers earning higher amounts depending on their experience.
  • Work Stability: Positions in Japan’s well-organized and efficient transport industry come with job security.
  • Cultural Experience: Workers will experience Japan’s renowned work culture and high safety standards in the transport sector.
