Jigawa Governor Assures Corps Members of Safety, Welfare

Jigawa State Governor, Malam Umar Namadi, has pledged his administration’s unwavering commitment to the safety and welfare of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members serving in the state.

The governor gave this assurance on Monday, October 19, 2026, during his official visit to the Batch C, Stream 1 corps members undergoing their orientation programme at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp in Dutse, the state capital. Governor Namadi welcomed the new intake to Jigawa State and encouraged them to integrate fully into their host communities, contributing meaningfully to local development.

His visit underscores the state government’s recognition of the vital role corps members play in the socio-economic development of Jigawa, particularly in critical sectors such as education, healthcare, and rural community development.

During his address, Governor Namadi reiterated that the state government, in collaboration with security agencies and traditional institutions, is committed to creating a safe and conducive environment for all corps members. He urged them to adhere strictly to the NYSC by-laws and the customs of their host communities, emphasising that mutual respect is key to a successful service year.

The governor highlighted the various initiatives his administration has put in place to support youth development and civic engagement, promising that these would extend to the corps members. He called on them to identify areas of need within their assigned communities and to initiate projects that could leave a lasting positive impact, noting that their youthful energy and skills are invaluable assets.

NYSC’s Role and State Commitment

The National Youth Service Corps scheme, established in 1973, is a mandatory one-year service programme for Nigerian graduates aimed at fostering national unity and development. Corps members are deployed to states across the country, often serving in areas far from their states of origin, which sometimes raises concerns about their adaptation, welfare, and, critically, safety.

Governors’ direct engagement with corps members, such as Malam Namadi’s visit, is often seen as a significant morale booster and a public demonstration of state support. Such assurances are particularly important in a country grappling with varying security challenges, as they help alleviate fears among corps members and their families.

Jigawa State, largely agrarian, benefits significantly from the influx of young, educated graduates who fill critical manpower gaps, especially in rural areas. The state government’s commitment to their welfare can help ensure optimal performance and attraction of quality personnel to underserved regions.

Governor Namadi also used the opportunity to inspect the camp facilities, reaffirming his administration’s commitment to enhancing the living conditions and training environment for corps members. The state government’s proactive measures in this regard are crucial for the seamless operation of the NYSC programme within Jigawa.

The governor’s assurances come as thousands of young Nigerian graduates embark on their mandatory service year, contributing to various sectors while gaining valuable work experience and exposure to different cultures within Nigeria. The Jigawa State government’s pledge, reported by Premium Times Nigeria, is expected to boost the confidence of corps members and encourage their active participation in community development.

The Batch C, Stream 1 orientation course will continue for the stipulated three weeks, during which corps members will undergo physical training, lectures on national development, and sensitisation to community service, before being deployed to their primary places of assignment across Jigawa State.
