The Judicial Council Starts Screening of 22 Justices for Supreme Court
The National Judicial Council (NJC) of Nigeria has embarked on a crucial task of screening 22 justices, a process initiated by the Federal Judicial Service Commission (FJSC) for potential elevation to the Supreme Court. This significant procedure is being held in the NJC’s Boardroom, marking a pivotal moment in the nation’s judicial history.
The NJC’s panel is set to conduct these important sessions over a week, aimed at selecting 11 justices from the 22 nominees to fill vacancies in the Supreme Court Bench. This initiative follows the retirement of Justice Amina Augie, among others, which left a noticeable gap in the Supreme Court.
The nominees for this honorable position come from various regions of Nigeria, ensuring a diverse representation. From the South-East, the nominees include Hon. Justice Nwaoma Uwa, Onyekachi Otisi, Obande Ogbuinya, Theresa Orji-Abadua, Anthony Ogakwu, and Chioma Nwosu-Iheme. Representing the South-South are Hon. Justice Moore Adumein and Biobele Georgewill. The South-West nominees are Hon. Justice Adewale Abiru and Olubunmi Oyewole.
From the North-Central region, the nominees are Hon. Justice Jummai Sankey, Muhammad Ibrahim Sirajo, Stephen Adah, Ridman Maiwada Abdullahi, Baba Idris, and Joseph Ikyegh. The North-East is represented by Hon. Justice Haruna Simon Tsammani and Abubakar Talba. Lastly, the North-West nominees include Hon. Justice Muhammad Lawal Shuaibu, Bello Aliyu, Abubakar Sadiq Umar, and Abdullahi Mahmud Bayero.
The Judicial Council’s screening process is a testament to Nigeria’s commitment to a robust and diverse judiciary. The selection of justices from different regions not only fulfills the need for regional representation but also enhances the quality of deliberations and judgments in the Supreme Court. This process is keenly observed by the legal fraternity and the public, who anticipate the final selection of justices who will shape the future of Nigeria’s judicial landscape.
