The Kano State Multi-Agency Task Force on Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking has arrested 380 suspects and secured 230 convictions during a major crackdown on narcotics within the state.
The intensive enforcement operation has focused on dismantling drug networks and prosecuting individuals involved in the distribution of controlled substances. Out of the 380 individuals apprehended, 230 have already faced successful prosecution in court, marking a high success rate for the state’s legal response to the drug menace.
A particularly disturbing aspect of the recent operations involved the exploitation of vulnerable minors. The chairman of the task force revealed that two rubber-solution dealers were recently convicted for exposing approximately 43 underage children to intoxicating substances. These children, many of whom are involved in street scavenging to survive, were targeted by dealers for their easy access to inhalants.
Convictions highlight exploitation of underage scavengers
The involvement of children in drug abuse has become a growing concern for social workers and security agencies in Northern Nigeria. The use of rubber solution, a cheap and readily available inhalant, is frequently observed among street-connected children who use the substance to numb hunger or cope with the harsh conditions of scavenging.
The task force’s recent successes indicate an aggressive approach to targeting those who supply these substances to minors. By securing convictions against dealers who specifically target children, the state government aims to disrupt the cycle of addiction that often begins in the streets of major urban centres like Kano.
Law enforcement officials stated that the high conviction rate is a result of improved intelligence gathering and closer collaboration between the various agencies operating within the multi-agency task force. This coordination has allowed for more efficient investigations and the presentation of stronger evidence during court proceedings.
While the arrests and convictions represent a victory for law enforcement, the issue of drug abuse remains deeply tied to socio-economic factors, including poverty and limited access to education. The task force’s activities are expected to continue, with a focus on identifying new distribution routes and addressing the influx of illicit substances into the state.
The state government is now expected to review social welfare interventions to protect the remaining vulnerable children identified during these raids.
