Katsina targets 70MW solar capacity for public facilities

The Katsina State Executive Council has approved the deployment of solar equipment across public facilities, aiming to achieve a 70MW renewable energy capacity. This initiative is intended to improve power reliability for government-operated infrastructure and reduce dependence on the national grid.

Alongside the energy project, the council approved a monthly allowance of N10,000 for 2,500 young people within the state. The decision also included the approval of various developmental projects across the education, healthcare, and road sectors.

The approval for solar equipment in Katsina reflects a growing trend among Nigerian state governments to adopt decentralised renewable energy solutions to mitigate the frequent collapses of the national electricity grid.

Energy transition and social welfare

By targeting 70MW of solar capacity, the state administration seeks to provide stable electricity to critical public assets. This move is expected to lower the long-term operational costs associated with diesel and petrol generators, which currently drain significant portions of state budgets to maintain power in hospitals, schools, and administrative offices.

The N10,000 monthly stipend for 2,500 youths is designed to provide a financial cushion for young residents. While the specific eligibility criteria for the beneficiaries have not been widely released, the scheme is framed as a social intervention to support the younger population amid current economic pressures.

In addition to the solar and youth welfare programmes, the executive council gave the green light to several infrastructure projects. These include the rehabilitation of roads, the upgrading of healthcare facilities, and investments in the education sector. These projects are intended to address long-standing infrastructural deficits that affect service delivery in the state.

The focus on road networks and healthcare is particularly significant for Katsina, as improved connectivity is often viewed as a prerequisite for both economic movement and enhanced security operations in the region. Strengthening healthcare facilities through better energy supply and physical infrastructure remains a priority for the state’s social service delivery.

While the solar initiative promises long-term energy security, the state government has yet to disclose the full budgetary allocation for the 70MW target or the specific timeline for the commencement of the approved road and healthcare projects.
