Kebbi Governor restarts abandoned erosion control project in Birnin Kebbi

Governor Nasir Idris has officially flagged off the resumption of work on an abandoned erosion control project covering the Badariya and Malala areas of Birnin Kebbi, the Kebbi State capital.

The move is intended to address the persistent erosion challenges that have long affected residents and threatened property in these parts of the capital. By restarting the stalled works, the state government aims to mitigate the environmental hazards caused by seasonal rainfall and improve the drainage landscape in the affected areas.

Speaking during the ceremony, Governor Idris expressed confidence that the project would provide a lasting solution to the erosion problems facing the communities. The decision marks a focus by the current administration on addressing infrastructure deficits left by previous cycles of governance.

Mitigating environmental hazards in Birnin Kebbi

The resumption of the erosion control project comes after years of complaints from residents in the Badariya and Malala axis. For much of the rainy season, these areas have faced significant soil degradation and drainage failures, which often lead to the destruction of local roads and residential structures.

The project had previously been left incomplete, leaving the communities vulnerable to the effects of heavy seasonal flooding. The current administration has indicated that addressing these abandoned sites is a priority to prevent further economic and structural losses within the state capital.

Erosion in urban centres like Birnin Kebbi often presents a dual challenge of environmental damage and economic disruption, as damaged roads hinder local commerce and movement. By reinforcing the drainage systems and soil stability in these specific areas, the government expects to stabilise the landscape and protect the livelihoods of those living in the vicinity.

Contractors have been directed to commence work immediately to ensure the project reaches completion before the peak of the next heavy rainfall period. The state government is expected to provide further details regarding the specific project timeline and the final budget allocated for the completion of the works.
