Kenyan President William Ruto Sacks Cabinet After Deadly Protests, Retains VP

President William Ruto has dismissed all his cabinet members except the Vice President and the Prime Cabinet Secretary following weeks of fatal protests.

“I have decided to dismiss with immediate effect all the cabinet secretaries and attorney general of the Cabinet of Kenya except the prime cabinet secretary and the cabinet secretary for foreign and diaspora affairs, and of course, the Office of the Deputy President is not affected in any way,” President Ruto said in an address to the nation on Thursday.

According to him, new officials will be appointed after extensive consultations across board.

The Backstory

Protests broke out in Kenya after a Finance Bill aimed at increasing taxes across board was passed into law, despite the already high cost of living in the country.

Although Ruto withdrew the Bill days after over 20 were killed during the civil unrest, Kenyans remained on the streets, demanding the President’s resignation.

William Ruto’s government said the tax hikes are needed to pay off Kenya’s huge debt, which is about 10 trillion shillings ($78 billion) – almost 70 percent of the country’s revenue in a year.
