KFC Shutdown Over Discrimination Against Disabled Ex-Gov’s Son

The Murtala Muhammed Airport in Lagos, a branch of the popular fast-food chain, KFC, has been forced to close its doors. This decision comes in the wake of allegations of discrimination levelled against the outlet, particularly concerning its treatment of Adebola Daniel, the son of former Ogun State Governor, Gbenga Daniel.

Adebola Daniel, who uses a wheelchair, took to social media to share his distressing experience at the KFC outlet within the airport premises. Recounting the incident, he described being denied entry due to his wheelchair, despite being a frequent flyer and well-versed in airport procedures.

Daniel who lamented in a series of tweets described the incidence as the worst sort of public humiliation he has experienced, shedding light on the challenges faced by disabled individuals in Nigeria and the stigma they often encounter.

FAAN swiftly intervened in response to the outcry, taking action to shut down the KFC facility at MMIA. The decision was made in accordance with Lagos State laws prohibiting discrimination against people with special needs. FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Mrs. Obiageli Orah, emphasized the authority’s commitment to upholding the rights of all passengers and ensuring a discrimination-free environment within airport premises.

Following the closure, KFC issued a statement expressing regret over the incident and pledging to implement sensitivity training for its employees. The fast-food chain reaffirmed its commitment to inclusivity and respect for all customers, promising to explore solutions to better accommodate the needs of disabled guests.

The Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA) also condemned the discrimination faced by Adebola Daniel, highlighting the importance of treating individuals with disabilities with dignity and respect. LASODA urged anyone who experiences discrimination based on their disability to report such incidents for action.

This incident has reignited conversations about inclusivity and accessibility in public spaces, particularly for individuals with disabilities.
