One Dead as Building Collapses on Ikorodu Road in Lagos

A fatal building collapse on Akinola Street, located off Ikorodu Road in Lagos, resulted in the death of one person and the rescue of three others on Friday morning.

Emergency responders arrived at the scene shortly after the incident to manage the situation and pull survivors from the wreckage. The collapse occurred during the early hours, causing panic among residents and commuters in the busy Ikorodu Road axis.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) is currently on-site to coordinate rescue efforts and secure the perimeter. The incident has disrupted movement around the immediate area as officials work to clear the debris and search for any remaining occupants.

The occurrence of a building collapse on Akinola Street follows a pattern of structural failures in Lagos, where poor construction practices and building code violations have frequently led to loss of life and property damage.

While the exact cause of the collapse has not yet been determined, the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) is expected to launch a formal investigation. Officials will investigate whether the structure possessed the required building permits and whether it met the state’s stringent safety and engineering standards.

Lagos has seen several high-profile building collapses in recent years, often attributed to the use of substandard materials, lack of professional oversight, and illegal expansions of existing structures. These incidents have placed increased pressure on state agencies to enforce stricter compliance with the Lagos State Urban and Regional Planning Law and to conduct more frequent inspections of older buildings in high-density areas.

Residents in the vicinity have expressed concerns regarding the stability of neighbouring buildings. Emergency services are currently assessing the surrounding structures to ensure that no further collapses occur due to the impact of the initial failure or the vibrations from heavy rescue machinery.

The state government has yet to release an official statement regarding the identities of the deceased or the rescued individuals. Investigations into the structural integrity of the building and the potential culpability of the developers are expected to commence once the site is fully cleared and secured.
