List of Award Winners at the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket Final
While Nigeria’s historic fifth consecutive FIBA Women’s AfroBasket title took most of the attention on Sunday night, the closing ceremony in Abidjan also celebrated the individual performances that made the tournament special.
Over the two weeks of competition, standout players from across Africa displayed their skill, leadership, and consistency. These players were honoured with awards as the tournament came to a close.
Leading the list of award winners was Nigeria’s Amy Okonkwo, who was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament for the second time in a row.
The strong forward was key to Nigeria’s success throughout the competition, showing a mix of power and finesse. In the final match against Mali, she gave an all-around performance, scoring 19 points, grabbing 9 rebounds, and giving 3 assists, which helped Nigeria win 78–64 and claim their seventh AfroBasket title.
Although many praised Rena Wakama, Nigeria’s coach, no official award was given for Best Coach. However, Wakama’s leadership has been exceptional, guiding Nigeria to back-to-back titles and making her the first coach in tournament history to do so in her first two appearances.
The award ceremony didn’t just celebrate the winners, but also showed how the level of women’s basketball has grown across Africa. As the 2025 FIBA Women’s AfroBasket came to an end, the focus now shifts to how these players and teams will build on their success in preparation for Olympic and global qualification.
