LP to Peter Obi: Resign in 48 Hours or We’ll Expel You

The Labour Party (LP), under the leadership of Julius Abure, has issued a sharp ultimatum to former presidential candidate Peter Obi, demanding that he resign from the party within 48 hours or face immediate expulsion. This decision follows Obi’s alignment with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), a new opposition coalition party, which is intended to challenge President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

What’s Driving the Deadline?

The Abure-led faction of LP has criticised Obi’s involvement with the ADC, labelling its members as “power mongers” and accusing them of undermining the party’s position.

“Labour Party has consistently said it is not part of the coalition and therefore, any of our members who is part of the coalition is given within 48 hours to formally resign his membership of the party,” the party said in a statement signed by the Abure faction National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh.

Earlier on Thursday, Obi publicly reaffirmed his commitment to the coalition.

“No one group can change Nigeria alone… we must build bridges, not walls even when those bridges are uneasy…”, he shared in a post on X.

Opposition Reactions

Many supporters of Obi argue that unity across party lines is essential to challenging the ruling administration.

Bashir Ahmad, former spokesperson for President Muhammadu Buhari, described the LP’s position as “incredibly disrespectful,” noting that Obi was instrumental in raising the party’s national profile.

Meanwhile, the LP leadership has warned that all members with dual affiliations risk suspension. The party emphasised that it will not tolerate what it called “one leg in, one leg out” politics.
