Lufthansa Wins Stake in TAP Air Portugal to Boost African Links

Lufthansa has secured a substantial minority stake in TAP Air Portugal, winning a high-stakes bidding process against Air France-KLM. The transaction, valued at approximately $1.3 billion, positions the German carrier to shape an airline that serves as a critical bridge between Europe, the Americas, and Africa.

The deal gives Lufthansa strategic influence over an airline that currently links 14 African destinations to the European market. This acquisition allows the Group to expand its footprint across the African continent without the immediate capital expenditure required to launch new long-haul routes from its primary hubs in Frankfurt and Munich.

Air France-KLM had aggressively pursued the stake in an attempt to protect its own dominance in the Africa-Europe aviation corridor. The failure of the Franco-Dutch carrier to secure the deal marks a shift in the competitive balance of Atlantic and Mediterranean air traffic.

TAP Air Portugal is uniquely positioned as a gateway carrier. Its network is heavily geared towards the South Atlantic, making it a primary conduit for trade, diplomatic missions, and business travel between the European Union and various African economies.

Industry analysts suggest that Lufthansa intends to use the stake to better coordinate schedules and potentially integrate loyalty programmes, reducing friction for corporate travellers moving between Germany and African markets.

Strategic Influence over African Aviation Routes

TAP’s operational strength in Africa is rooted in deep historical and linguistic ties, particularly with Lusophone nations such as Angola, Mozambique, and Cape Verde. These routes are often underserved by other major European carriers, providing Lufthansa with a ready-made entry point into these high-growth markets.

The move is expected to impact how cargo and passenger traffic is routed into West and Southern Africa. By aligning TAP’s network with its own, Lufthansa can offer more competitive transit times for business travellers moving from North America or Asia through Europe into Africa.

This strategic alignment comes at a time when African aviation is seeing increased investment and a push for greater connectivity under the Single African Air Transport Market (SAATM) framework. Lufthansa’s entry into TAP’s ownership structure provides the German group with a hedge against the volatility of direct long-haul operations.

TAP Air Portugal has faced significant financial volatility in recent years, including periods of heavy reliance on the Portuguese state to maintain operations. The entry of a strong strategic partner is viewed as a necessary step to ensure the airline’s long-term commercial viability.

The investment is likely to be paired with operational upgrades. Industry sources indicate that Lufthansa will provide technical expertise and procurement leverage to help TAP Air Portugal reduce its operating costs and modernise its fleet.

For African businesses, the deal could lead to improved capacity and more reliable scheduling on routes into Lisbon, which serves as a primary transit hub for those travelling further into the Schengen Area.

The transaction now awaits final regulatory approvals from Portuguese aviation authorities and the European Commission’s competition watchdog. These regulators will examine whether the minority stake creates an unfair advantage in the Europe-Africa market.

Following the approval process, the two airlines are expected to announce a joint strategic roadmap for the 2026-2027 period, focusing on capacity expansion and digital integration of booking systems.
