Governor Seyi Makinde has moved to transition the Ibadan Airport into an international gateway to strengthen Oyo State’s connection to global markets.
During a recent inspection of the newly constructed terminal, the Governor stated that the upgrade is essential for enhancing the state’s accessibility to international trade and commerce. The project aims to position the facility as a strategic aviation hub capable of handling more than just domestic traffic.
The push for international status follows the completion of significant infrastructural developments at the facility. By elevating the airport’s status, the Oyo State government intends to attract foreign investors and facilitate easier movement for international business travellers and tourists.
Aviation infrastructure and trade connectivity
The inspection, which included a walkthrough of the new terminal building, allowed the Governor to assess the readiness of the facility to meet the standards required for international operations. Makinde noted that the upgrade would serve as a conduit for the state’s economic ambitions, linking local producers and businesses directly to the world.
The Governor’s commitment to the project was evident during his recent tour of the Ibadan Airport new terminal, where he emphasised that the facility must serve as a gateway for economic growth.
Currently, the airport primarily handles domestic flights. Transitioning to an international status requires meeting stringent regulatory requirements set by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). These include the establishment of dedicated customs, immigration, and quarantine facilities, as well as enhanced security protocols to manage international passenger traffic.
For Oyo State, the expansion of the airport offers a strategic advantage within the South-West economic corridor. With the Lagos international airports frequently facing congestion, a functional international gateway in Ibadan could provide a vital alternative for regional and international carriers, thereby easing pressure on existing hubs.
Beyond passenger travel, the upgraded facility is expected to support increased cargo and logistics operations. Enhanced aviation infrastructure often leads to the development of surrounding commercial real estate and industrial zones, creating employment opportunities for residents of Ibadan and the wider Oyo State area.
The state government is now expected to begin formal consultations with the Federal Ministry of Aviation to align the airport’s development with national aviation policies and secure the necessary certifications for international operations.
