Makinde unveils RESET agenda with tax break promises

Seyi Makinde, the presidential candidate for the African Progressive Movement (APM), has unveiled his RESET agenda, a political framework designed to reform Nigeria’s economy, security, and education systems ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The agenda includes a commitment to introducing tax breaks to ease the financial strain on citizens. During the unveiling, Makinde criticised the federal government, claiming its current economic and tax policies have increased the hardship faced by Nigerians.

Beyond fiscal policy, the RESET agenda promises an end to militancy and substantial reforms in the education sector to drive long-term national development.

Economic and security reforms in the RESET plan

The APM candidate’s platform focuses on alleviating the cost of living through targeted fiscal interventions. Makinde argued that the federal government’s approach to taxation has worsened the economic burden on the population. By proposing these breaks, Makinde aims to create a more hospitable environment for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), which are vital to the Nigerian economy but often struggle under heavy tax obligations.

Security remains a core component of the proposal. Makinde pledged to address militancy to ensure national stability and protect key economic interests. This focus on security is intended to mitigate the risks that have historically deterred both local and foreign direct investment in critical sectors, particularly in resource-rich regions.

The education pillar of the RESET agenda intends to restructure the learning sector to meet modern industrial demands. The proposed reforms are expected to focus on vocational training and digital literacy, aligning school curricula with the needs of a modern global economy and enhancing human capital development.

As the 2027 election cycle approaches, Makinde’s platform sets a specific direction for the African Progressive Movement. The party must now detail how these national reforms will be funded and implemented within the complexities of the Nigerian federal structure.

The effectiveness of these proposals will face scrutiny as political campaigning intensifies and opposition parties respond to his critique of the current administration’s economic management.
