Alhaji Shehu Marwa, the Chairman of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), has commended Nigerian security agencies for their successful operation to rescue 20 corps members who were recently kidnapped.
The Chairman expressed satisfaction with the efficiency shown by the security forces during the rescue mission of the abducted youths, noting that the operation brought much-needed relief to the NYSC management and the families of the affected members.
Marwa urged the security agencies to maintain their current level of alertness and sustain the momentum achieved in this operation to prevent similar occurrences in the future. He noted that the success of such operations is a critical component of ensuring the safety of corps members across the country.
Speaking on the development, Marwa also called on Nigerians to provide necessary support to the country’s security forces. He emphasised that intelligence sharing and community cooperation are vital to the success of security operations and that citizens must play their part in protecting the nation.
Security concerns for NYSC members
The safety of corps members during their one-year mandatory service remains a primary concern for the NYSC leadership. The scheme, which brings together graduates from across the federation to serve in various parts of the country, often requires young citizens to travel to or reside in areas that may face security challenges.
Kidnapping for ransom has emerged as a significant threat to the security of corps members in several states. This has prompted the NYSC to frequently engage with state governments and security outfits to ensure a safer environment for those undertaking their service year. The agency has consistently advocated for enhanced security measures in rural and high-risk areas where corps members are often posted.
The successful rescue of these 20 members is viewed as a victory for the security agencies in their ongoing efforts to combat banditry and organised crime. However, the incident has also renewed calls for more proactive security arrangements to shield young graduates from criminal elements.
While the NYSC has celebrated this outcome, the agency continues to monitor the security situation in various deployment zones. The security agencies have not yet released specific details regarding the location of the rescue or the circumstances of the initial abduction, but the NYSC management is expected to continue its collaboration with the relevant authorities to ensure the ongoing protection of all corps members.
