Governor Peter Mbah has unveiled a multi-billion naira pharmaceutical company in Enugu, a move intended to bolster local drug manufacturing and improve healthcare delivery across Nigeria.
The project is expected to address the persistent challenges of drug accessibility and the high cost of medicines driven by heavy reliance on imports. The establishment of this facility is projected to create substantial employment opportunities for residents in Enugu State and the wider Southeast region.
The unveiling of the multi-billion naira pharmaceutical company in Enugu was attended by the Chairman of the company’s Board of Directors, Rear Admiral Allison Madueke (Rtd), alongside state officials and industry stakeholders.
Strengthening local drug production and healthcare
Nigeria’s pharmaceutical sector currently faces significant pressure due to a high dependency on foreign-sourced active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and finished medicinal products. This reliance has frequently exposed the domestic healthcare system to the volatility of the foreign exchange market, leading to price hikes for essential drugs.
By establishing a large-scale manufacturing plant within Enugu, the company aims to mitigate these supply chain vulnerabilities. The facility is designed to increase the volume of locally produced drugs, which can help stabilise prices and ensure a more consistent supply of essential medicines for the Nigerian population.
The investment aligns with the Enugu State government’s broader economic strategy to attract large-scale private sector participation in manufacturing. Under the administration of Governor Mbah, the state has been working to improve the ease of doing business to encourage industrialisation and economic diversification.
Beyond healthcare, the economic impact of the pharmaceutical plant extends to the local labour market. The facility is expected to require a diverse workforce, ranging from specialised pharmacists and laboratory scientists to factory technicians and administrative staff, providing much-needed professional opportunities for the state’s youth.
As the company prepares to come on stream, the focus remains on its ability to scale production to meet national demand. The successful operation of the plant will depend on the stability of local energy supplies and the continued ability of the state to provide an enabling environment for industrial growth.
