MLS All-Star Voting Begins: Messi, Suarez, Hernandez Up for Selection

Voting for the 2024 MLS All-Star Game is now open, inviting fans, players, and media members to participate in selecting which soccer stars will feature in this year’s match. 

Set for July 24 at Lower.com Field in Columbus, Ohio, the event will see the MLS All-Stars face off against the Liga MX All-Stars in both a traditional game and a skills challenge.

A total of 26 players, including Inter Miami’s Lionel Messi—the reigning world player of the year—and his teammate, Uruguay’s star striker Suarez, as well as Riqui Puig and Cucho Hernandez, are vying for a spot on the prestigious roster. 

The team’s lineup will be strategically chosen in a 4-1-2-3 formation, comprising one goalkeeper, one right back, two centre backs, one left back, one defensive midfielder, two attacking midfielders, and three forwards/wingers.

The selection process includes a third of the votes coming from MLS players, another third from fans, and the final third from media members, totaling 12 players. 

Additionally, Columbus Crew head coach Wilfried Nancy, who will manage the MLS All-Stars, will personally select 12 players. MLS Commissioner Don Garber will round out the selection by choosing two players.

According to Goal, to be eligible for the All-Star ballot, players must have participated in at least 50% of their club’s matches by May 13.

Those not meeting this criterion may still be picked by either Coach Nancy or Commissioner Garber.

Last year’s All-Star game saw the MLS team take on Arsenal from the English Premier League, where they faced a tough 5-0 defeat.

This year marks a return to the previous format where MLS stars compete against top talent from Liga MX, rekindling the spirited rivalry.

Fans looking to support their favorite players have until June 10 to cast their votes for the 26-man roster.
