Mother Commits Suicide Over Hardship, Abandons Children at Police Station
In a heart-wrenching incident that highlights the dire economic hardship faced by many Nigerians, a woman took her own life after abandoning her three young children at a police station in Enugu. The mother, whose identity remains unknown, is believed to have been grappling with depression due to the soaring cost of living.
The devastating act occurred when the woman left her children, all under the age of six, at Ogui Police Station. In a shocking turn of events, she then disrobed and ran into a moving vehicle, resulting in her immediate death. The children, now motherless, could only provide limited information about their family, with the eldest stating that their father had been “lost.”
In the wake of this tragedy, Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, the wife of Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah, has stepped forward to offer support. She has pledged to sponsor the children’s daily needs and education through her Custos Care Foundation. Mrs. Mbah has also ensured that the children will be relocated from the police station to a state-run home where they will be cared for.
This incident underscores the profound impact of Nigeria’s current economic policies under President Bola Tinubu’s administration, which have significantly increased inflation and the cost of living. As a result, many citizens are experiencing unprecedented hardship.
Mrs. Mbah has called on those who are feeling depressed to seek help and counseling to prevent such drastic actions. She also urged the Commissioner for the Ministry of Children, Gender, and Social Development, Mrs. Ngozi Enih, to enhance sensitization and counseling efforts for those in need.
This tragic story serves as a stark reminder of the urgent need for economic relief and mental health support in Nigeria, as families struggle to cope with the mounting pressures of daily life.
